2010 was magical, there is no doubt about that. The Olympics, Paris, Switzerland, Hawaii, Vegas, weddings, it was all decently documented here, so I’ll try to not bore everyone with the details again.
But this year is about to come to a close. With two short days left in the year it is time to look ahead. Looking ahead though, frightens the shit out of me.
Almost 30, still single, and feeling a wee unsatisfied, I don’t know what I want from 2011.
And yes, I know I said I was ok with 30, but I may have been a big fat liar. There is so much shit that I want to do with my life, and I feel like I’m running out of time. I mean eventually, I want to settle down, find a boy to spend my life with, but I don't want to rush anything, and well need to hurry the fuck up. Time's running out!
That being said, I think from 2011, I want adventure. I want to feel like I took some chances on me, and maybe one or two will work, but if not, I want to look back on the year ahead thinking I grabbed it by the balls and made 2011 my bitch.
Also, I would like a new liver. This one won’t cut it for much longer.
The misadventures of an unapologetically inappropriate woman as she embarks on a Middle Eastern adventure.

All reflective and shit.
At the end of 2009, the only thing I can think about is my relationships. Sadly, few were romantic, although cute boys played their parts, it was the platonics - in all shapes - that left the biggest impact on me.
From the complicated to the simple, from blood relatives to chosen family, from business to bizarro, the people in my life taught me the importance of friendship.
How they'll keep you afloat, when you're pretty sure you'd sink. And keep you sane, when you're in the middle of re-election for Mayor of Crazytown.
They taught me a million times over, that there is nothing better in the world than being loved, regardless of the type.
Apparently, not everyone in Vancouver sucks, thus my friend count grew. Considerably. So much so that I have a life here, and well, it is a nice life. Although I still occasionally ache for Edmonton. And that's ok.
This lesson was learned from loss as well. This year, the first boy I loved, decided that though we were long over romantically, our friendship wasn't working either. Our lives stopped intersecting and I realized how fragile some relationships are. And how temporary. So. Very. Temporary. I lost not only him, but my favorite thing about Vancouver.
I got the scare of my life when I thought I was going to lose my best friend. The one person I could trust, beyond a shadow of a doubt, taught me in a big way how to appreciate her, and wish we weren't so far apart. Sometimes.
Oh these friends of mine. From giving me a trip home for my birthday, to getting into endless amounts of trouble with me and well, making me feel like the luckiest chick in the world, these people are the best pieces of me, only to the nth degree.
And despite not finding romantic love this year, these relationships ensure I am never lacking for real love.

According to the critics
Last year, I did a month-by-month recount. To be totally honest with you, I don't think that is possible this year.
Not because this year wasn't good, but just because it wasn't as monumental as last year. So this year will be a random best-of.
So here it goes, probably a little disjointed, but so am I.
Best activity: Hands down, rock climbing
I love climbing. I never thought I would like it as much as I do, but here
I am, blogging about it.
Geek.
There is something so satisfying about finishing a hard route, or moving
up to the next difficulty. The best part about it? It is the only time in my
day that I am quiet - my head is concentrating on only one thing and my
whole body is pursuing that one thing.
It is incredible.
And, the boys are pretty cute.
Worst activity: Sailing
I came up with this plan this year - to eventually retire on a boat. So, I signed up for sailing lessons and was ready to fall in love with sailing.
That didn't happen.
Maybe it was because there was no wind and it was more tedious than exciting, I just didn't dig it.
Plus, those sails are really heavy.
See, I am not that granola.
Favorite big-ticket purchase: moving my shit to Vancouver
Sure, it wasn't really a purchase, but it was fucking expensive.
I was totally in denial. I didn't REALLY need my furniture out here, really, what was the big deal??
I can't believe I ever thought that way. It was a HUGE deal. The second I got my couch and my bed and my everything, Vancouver started to feel like home. I started to feel like me and life started to improve.
Seriously. I wouldn't have believed it either.
The climbing shoes are ugly, they stink and they hurt my feet a lot of times, but I love them. I took them to China with me and looked at them longingly because I couldn't use them. I just got them re-soled and they are like new! Yay!
The Kenneth Coles, well, they are fucking hot. I get compliments on them all the time and they make my legs look fucking awesome.
I forgot them in Beijing and now have to pay $50 to get them back. THIS is the problem with traveling.
Favorite thing about Vancouver: Walking home from work and the water taxi
During the summer, I discovered the water taxi. It is awesome.
On nice days, when I have my flats with me, I walk home from work and take the water taxi to get across the bay.
When I get to English Bay, I sit on a log, look west to the mountains, ships and Stanley Park and smoke. Ahh.
It is the perfect way to end a day.
The water taxi brings me to Kits beach and the perfect walk home.
It makes me happy like a mo-fo.
Love of the year: Sia
When I lived with P3, I didn't really get it. Sia was his and that was that.
Then, just before my birthday, she had a seizure and I have never been more scared. Not even when I was in hospital.
She couldn't walk and you could see the fear in her eyes. It was devastating.
That is when I finally got it - she is everything a person could ask for and more. And I would be lost without her.
When I couldn't walk, I credit Sia with getting me out there and walking. When I was going through a rough break up, Sia came and sat with me while I cried. Now, all I need is a little Sia love and my day is better and my world is happy.
She is the best thing in the fucking world.
And the love she gives is unconditional. Her happiness to see you is not faked and everything about her is perfect. She is a little damaged, which makes her all the more special. She doesn't like everyone and it takes her a while to really warm up to someone. But now, I am pretty sure, she loves me as much as she loves P3 - he gets jelly, it is both funny and a little sad *for him, not me, I get nothing but joy out of it*.
She is lovely. She is the loveliest brown color. She is my puppy love. She is Sia.

Favorite new shoes: Tie - climbing shoes and black Kenneth Cole Mary Janes

How Cliche
Ok all, here is my review of 2007. Not music, not movies, not books, not even TV, just me. Boring old me recounting the highs and lows of 2007.
I give you permission to browse away from this blog now.
JANUARY
An heart-breaking month. I had to finally give-up on New York City, leave the great apartment I found and return to Edmonton. My birthday was spent flying and crying. How sad is that? When I got back to Edmonton, I remembered why I love it so – my friends.
FEBRUARY
As the effects of going from NYC to Edmonton started to really hit me, I became bored with my job and my life. It is difficult to appreciate the things you have when you long for the things you have lost.
MARCH
A brutal job interview – that I didn’t get. A great trip with a dear friend and a lot of shopping to go with it.
APRIL
I fell for a boy. A boy that changed what I thought I wanted in a person and helped me really care for a person for the first time in a while. It is rare to find something and someone like that. God do I love those butterflies you get when you start seeing someone. Magical. Oh and I was published. Twice.
MAY
So in love. May was spent traveling around the country following the boy. One of the best trips was to Regina, I enjoyed doing nothing but smoking, drinking and harassing Legislative pages. What more could a girl want? I also got a great roommate in May. I loved living with Big Daddy this summer, it was fun and not annoying at all. Saw Feist and The Killers.
JUNE
Why is that the fear of something is often worse than the reality of it? June was spent traveling from coast-to-coast, Vancouver to Halifax in a week. First to visit the boy and then to watch an old friend get married. The middle of June was difficult to say the least, as this was my first visit of the summer to the hospital. Four days in hospital, what is worse than that? Oh, the boy seeing me in my hospital gown, that is what. Also bought the greatest game of all time. It helped shape my summer, and the summers of Big Daddy and P3. So many night spent playing on my balcony and in the living room. Many curse words said and a few feelings hurt, but I still want wheat for ore.
JULY
Another hospital visit and another trip to Vancouver, but this time we drove back to Edmonton. Beautiful. Not having full control of your body can really ruin a month. The boy was a wonderful support system, giving me an outlet I refused to burden my friends with. There are some things you can’t ask for, but when they are given to you, wow.
AUGUST
Camping for the first time, which was surprisingly fun. Whoda thunk it? I also made a decision to put myself out there career-wise. I gave my resignation to the hotel and decided to have ‘the fear’. Oh I got the fear, that is for sure.
SEPTEMBER
Went out east to meet the boy’s grandma and extended family. What an honor it is for someone to think you are special enough to meet important people. I have never had anyone think I was that special. We also went to Montreal to visit Harp and Big Daddy. Oh yeah, I finally got a job and I moved. Wow, September was kinda a big deal.
OCTOBER
Settled into my new life and had a hard time doing it. How does someone go from having the greatest people in the world, just a phone call away to having only one person to talk to? Not very well. I lost myself in October. I didn’t do the things I like doing, having the life I like having and being the person it took me so long to like. I keep on chalking it up to the various changes in my life, but really, the burden is solely on me for not trying harder to be the things I wanted to be. My bad.
NOVEMBER
Fell in love with my job. The work, the people, the whole thing is great. I couldn’t have asked for a better job and feel vindicated for holding out for so long. Take that dad. Visited Edmonton and became very sad. Went to Whistler and didn’t ski. Saw M.I.A. Holla!
DECEMBER
How things change. My first real break-up with a boy that I care about. Really, the first boy I have ever cared about. How can a person be so wrong about a situation, thinking you are going to spend a significant about of time with a person, to not being able to spend anymore time with them? It makes me wonder, where did the awesome go? Because it was awesome. More awesome than anything I have experienced before.
And that is my year in review.
I stole this idea from Sarah, who told me about a lady who wrote about her 23 year marriage with a paragraph for every year. I cannot imagine being concise enough to do something like that. Or having that good of a memory for that matter.
